Predeparture / Arrival : Registration
Registration at the University of Washington is one of many Web-based services, available to students on MyUW. Registration is quick and easy to do but good planning before you register is essential. To register online, you must first complete the following steps.
Preparing to Register
- MyUW - MyUW is your personal webpage, containing links to services most used at the UW.
- UW NetID - To register for classes, you must have already established a UW NetID.
- Private Access Code (PAC) - To create a UW NetID, you will need your Private Access Code (PAC), which is included on your University of Washington Registration Notice card.
- Registration Date - In addition to the PAC, the University of Washington Registration Notice includes your registration date. You will be eligible to register from the date posted on this card.
- Immunization - All new students are required to provide proof of measles (rubeola) immunity. The Immunization Web page provides additional information and has a downloadable Measles Immunity Verification form.
- Insurance - Open MyUW and select
"Insurance/Optional Charges" from the Personal Services list in
Student Information, select the upcoming quarter, and enter your
selections.
Please note: even if you already have insurance coverage, you must initially select UW Student Insurance. Once you arrive, you may submit an application for an insurance waiver to the International Services Office (ISO). Once approved, the ISO will remove the insurance charge from your student account.
How to Register
- To register, select the MyUW logo (http://myuw.washington.edu/) and log in
- Select Registration located in the Personal Services section.
- Select Time Schedule under Registration Resources to see course offerings, availability and other course registration restrictions. Use the Time Schedule in tandem with the registration page to register for your classes.
- You are now ready to register.
- In the Time Schedule, each course is assigned a four digit Schedule Line Number (SLN). Enter this number in the appropriate field on the Web Registration Form.
- Enter an Add Code or Faculty Number (if one is required otherwise leave blank). Add codes allow you to register for restricted courses and are generally available from the advising office of the offering department or from the instructor of the course. Please e-mail Tina Wong for assistance.
- If you are taking a variable credit course, please consult with your instructor. Otherwise, please leave this field blank.
- Select Satisfactory/Not Satisfactory if you do not want to take this course for a numerical grade. This option is not available for courses offered Credit/No Credit Only. Please consult with your home university if you are considering this option.
Registration Tips
-
Read the descriptions of courses in the on-line Course Catalog.
The prerequisites listed there are enforced; you can't register for a course unless you have the prerequisite completed or in progress.
-
Check to see if your courses are open before starting to register.
Before you start web registration, check the Time Schedule to make sure the sections you are requesting are open. Click on the schedule line number for the section you want. If that section is closed, open sections (if any) of the same course will be listed.
-
Be prepared with a list of alternates.
Make a list of alternate sections and classes before starting web registration. Plan your schedule out on a grid with all the days and times, so you can see where you have openings.
The UW encourages students to take courses outside their major field of study. If you are unable to register for your first choice of classes, explore! You will find that the UW offers a wealth of options.
-
Learn how to read the registration restrictions in the Time Schedule.
Students often misinterpret registration restrictions, or ignore them and are puzzled when the computer won't let them register for a course. Many restrictions apply to only certain periods of registration. See How to Read the Time Schedule for an explanation of the abbreviations used.
Please note: All undergraduate exchange students are admitted as juniors in the College of Arts & Sciences, regardless of major at your home university. Access to courses in computer science, psychology, art, architecture and communications is extremely competitive and difficult. Also, studio classes and professional programs (e.g., health sciences and law) are generally not open to exchange students. You may be limited to courses outside these majors due to enrollment constraints.
You may enroll in all other courses on a space available basis, provided you have satisfied prerequisites for those courses. Since the UW system has no record of the academic work you have already completed at your home university, departmental advisors may ask to see your transcript to verify that you have completed requirements. Please remember to bring an updated transcript with you to Seattle.
If you are having difficulties due to registration restrictions, the IPE would be happy to assist you in contacting departmental advisors if needed. Please e-mail Tina Wong with the following information:
- Name
- Student Number
- Major at Home Institution
- Course Name & Number (e.g. PSYCH 101)
- SLN (4-digit number in Time Schedule)
- Reason for registration difficulties (e.g. prerequisites, course closed, etc.)
- Whether you have satisfied prerequisites at home university (if applicable)
- Name & e-mail of instructor
-
Verify your class schedule.
You can check your class schedule in MyUW. If you've dropped and/or added courses, ALWAYS check to make sure the transactions were processed. Just before the quarter begins, check your class schedule on MyUW. This will give you the latest information on any class cancellations, room changes, etc.
-
Keep registration fees to a minimum.
You are allowed to use web registration for free through the first week of the quarter. Starting the second week of the quarter, the fee to add or drop courses is $20 per day. If you have to change your schedule after the first week of the quarter, try to make all your changes on the same day so you will be charged only one $20 fee.
Please contact IPE if you incur any late registration fees.
