How To Apply: Visiting Graduate Students

Congratulations on your nomination to study as an IPE Visiting Graduate Student at the University of Washington. Please read the instructions below before filling out the application and other forms.

Please Note: Nomination as an exchange candidate does not guarantee admission to the UW. Your application will be reviewed by the department you indicate on your application. Final decisions regarding your application will be made by the department.

Please be aware that Computer Science, Art, Education (practicum/student teaching) and Health Sciences (clinical work) are not open to Visiting Graduate Students. Political Science will only consider year-long applicants to their program and Economics will only consider applicants for autumn quarter admission.

Application

The following documents are required in order to process your application:

  1. Copy of online application (signed)

    Note: You will be required to setup your own login and password when starting the application process. Once you have submitted your application online, please print out a copy and sign it in ink.

  2. Statement of financial ability (signed)
  3. Official bank statement/documentation of funds

    Please include an official letter from the bank, on the bank's official letterhead, signed in ink by the proper authority to confirm any personal or family funds. If you are receiving financial support from a sponsor, please include an official letter from the sponsor indicating the terms and amount of the award. Students with teaching or research assistantships must also complete and sign this form.

  4. Visiting graduate student Certificate of Status (signed)
  5. Statement of Purpose

    This should be a 1-2 page statement, in English, double-spaced, and addressed to the academic department in which you would like to study. It is the clear definition and communication of academic objectives and the compatibility of those objectives with our programs and faculty research interests that drive admissions decisions.

    Please explain your background in the field of study, what you would like to study/research while at the UW, your future career interests, and any other information about yourself that you feel is pertinent. We encourage you to identify unique and/or common research interests (with our faculty) and incorporate these points into your statement of purpose. Shared and/or unique research interests often catch the attention of faculty evaluators and lead to favorable assessments. Information about faculty research is readily available via each department's website, which is accessible from the the UW Homepage.

  6. Test Scores (if applicable)

    A) Verification of English Proficiency (if applicable.)

    Please contact your home university's international office about English proficiency requirements.

  7. Copy of Transcript
