Dates of Instruction
The academic year is divided into two semesters:
Fall: approx. September 1 –late December/January
Spring: approx. Late January –late May/early June
Please check the website for specific semester dates.
Housing
You are responsible for securing your own housing while participating on the exchange. Usually, students choose to apply for the university residence halls; some students find private accommodation on their own. You will receive more information about housing upon acceptance.
Cost
You will pay regular UW tuition (exchange fee) while you are on the exchange. If you are only participating for one semester, you will pay the equivalent of 1.5 quarters UW tuition. You will receive more information regarding this once you have been accepted
In addition, students are required to pay a UW IPE fee of $600 for the year ($300/semester). The fee includes:
- Concurrent enrollment;
- Financial aid and scholarship eligibility;
- Graded UW credit for coursework completed abroad;
- Pre-registration privileges at the UW;
- Continued deferment of school-related loans;
- Satisfaction of residency graduation requirements;
- Eligibility for UW Accident and Sickness Insurance (optional).
Concurrent Enrollment
All students participating in this program/exchange are required to concurrently enroll. For more information please see: http://ipe.washington.edu/domestic/enrollment.html
Health Screening
Since study abroad often means that students live with medical services and general health conditions that are different from those in their home country, you will be required to have a health screening and to submit a Health Screening Form with your Concurrent Enrollment Form.
Courses and Credits
Students generally earn 36-45 UW resident credits per year for a full load of coursework on the exchange. Full-time enrollment at the foreign university is a condition of participation in the exchange.
Please request that official transcripts from the foreign university attended be sent to IPE at the end of the exchange. You will be required to submit complete course descriptions to our office upon return; after evaluation by UW departments, the UW course equivalent and grade will be reported on your UW transcript. You will also be required to write an evaluation of the program immediately after your foreign study term is completed.
Please discuss your plans with an academic counselor prior to going abroad so that you are aware of how these credits fit into your degree program (i.e. will they count toward distribution or major requirements, or as electives). You will receive further information about academic and administrative issues from our office upon acceptance.
Terms and Eligibility
- Be enrolled as a regular, degree-seeking UW student;
- Have Junior standing or above by the exchange's beginning;
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0;
