Program Types

Affiliated Programs

Affiliated programs are study abroad opportunities that are organized by UW-member consortia or outside providers and universities.  These programs have been evaluated by the University of Washington and have been approved in advance for UW credit.

Affiliated programs offer varied levels of cultural integration and on-site support.  In many cases, student housing (in apartments, residence halls or host families), excursions and field trips are arranged by the program, and an on-site program director is available to help with concerns regarding housing, academics, health, safety, etc.  Students may study the language of their host country and complete additional coursework in English; they may take site-specific courses in English only; or they may take courses for foreigners in the language of the country.  As a result, affiliated programs may or may not require previous language study.

Departmental Programs

Departmental programs are study abroad programs that are developed and directed by UW faculty members.  These programs offer the opportunity for a smaller group of students to work closely with a UW professor in a specific area and country of interest.

Student housing (in apartments, residence halls or host families), excursions and field trips are arranged by the program, and the on-site program director is available to provide advice and assistance in regards to housing, academics, health, safety, etc.   Students complete courses in English, language courses and/or courses in the language of the country.  As a result, departmental programs may or may not require previous language study.
