Insurance Resources
The University of Washington strongly recommends that all students participating in foreign study/research programs maintain major medical insurance coverage while abroad. If your primary plan does not provide for emergency medical evacuation and repatriation of remains, it is recommended that you also purchase supplemental insurance to cover these possible expenses. It is vital that you thoroughly understand your coverage, its limits, and procedures for filing claims prior to departing from the United States. Insurance plans vary and your coverage outside the U.S. may differ from your coverage inside the U.S.
Below is a partial list of insurance plans you may wish to consider:*
Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI)
Comprehensive medical insurance policy. Option to purchase additional benefits such as tuition refund, emergency family reunion, and loss/theft of baggage & personal effects.
Includes emergency evacuation and repatriation of remains benefits
CMI Insurance Specialists
Comprehensive medical insurance policy. Option to purchase additional benefits such as tuition refund, emergency family reunion, and loss/theft of baggage & personal effects.
Includes emergency evacuation and repatriation of remains benefits.
UW Accident and Sickness Insurance Plan
Does not provide emergency medical evacuation or repatriation of remains benefits.
International Student Identity Card (ISIC)
Basic medical coverage only; however, benefits include emergency evacuation and repatriation of remains.
Basic Emergency Travel Assistance (BETA)
Accidental medical protection only; however, benefits include emergency medical evacuation and repatriation of remains.

If, after having thoroughly considered all of your insurance options, you would like to purchase the UW Accident & Sickness Insurance Plan, please download the UW Accident and Sickness Insurance form and return it to the IPE office before the following deadlines:
Fall Quarter: September 1
Winter Quarter: December 1
Summer Quarter: June 1
